Anyone in the petrochemical industry knows that most of our production media are flammable, explosive, and easily oxidized; therefore, safety is always the top priority. Nitrogen is chemically stable, non-flammable, and does not support combustion. It is the most commonly used and reliable inert protective gas in our production, essential throughout the entire process.
During plant start-up, shutdown, and maintenance, nitrogen must be used to purge and replace pipelines and equipment, removing internal oxygen and flammable gases to mitigate explosion risks at the source. This is a basic safety operation in the industry.
Simultaneously, storage tanks for crude oil, refined oil, and various chemical raw materials require continuous nitrogen sealing protection to isolate them from air, prevent material deterioration and oil/gas volatilization, and reduce safety hazards in tank areas. In high-temperature reaction processes such as hydrogenation and cracking, nitrogen also protects catalysts, prevents equipment corrosion during shutdowns, and provides inerting for sudden gas leaks, comprehensively ensuring the stable operation of the production line.
In the past, without on-site nitrogen generation equipment, the entire plant relied on liquid nitrogen tanker trucks and high-pressure nitrogen cylinders for gas supply. Having worked in this field for many years, the shortcomings and problems are deeply understood.
First, the cost is inflated. The purchase and long-distance transportation of liquid nitrogen are expensive, and the natural evaporation losses during storage and transfer add up significantly to annual production costs, which is extremely uneconomical.
Second, the gas supply is unstable. Complete reliance on external logistics makes it prone to delays and interruptions in gas supply during severe weather, road congestion, or peak season supply shortages. This is especially true for remote plants and offshore platforms, where logistics are inconvenient, leading to frequent gas outages and work stoppages, severely impacting continuous production.
Finally, there are safety and labor issues. High-pressure cylinders require frequent manual handling, replacement, and connection, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Frequent start-ups and shutdowns can cause pressure fluctuations, affecting the precision of production processes, and also pose safety hazards such as leaks and pressure buildup.
In recent years, the industry has had increasingly higher requirements for low-carbon and environmental protection. Purchasing nitrogen from external sources not only results in a higher carbon footprint, but also makes it difficult to flexibly adjust the volume and purity of the gas, which has long been unable to keep up with the needs of modern petrochemical production.
Compared to the various shortcomings of traditional externally purchased gas supply, the biggest advantage of the PSA pressure swing adsorption nitrogen generator is its ability to produce gas on-site and use it immediately.
The equipment relies on the adsorption principle of carbon molecular sieves to directly separate nitrogen from the air at room temperature, eliminating the need for external procurement and transportation, and completely freeing it from logistical and weather limitations. In actual use, the biggest impression is threefold stability: stable gas supply, stable parameters, and stable operation.

It has a low daily failure rate, requiring less frequent downtime for maintenance, greatly reducing the workload of operation and maintenance.
Over the years, we've replaced several nitrogen generators, but the Jiamai PSA nitrogen generator is currently our mainstay in the workshop.
