PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) nitrogen production is a physical nitrogen production technology that uses air as a raw material and carbon molecular sieves as an adsorbent. It achieves kinetic separation of oxygen and nitrogen through periodic pressure changes, thereby continuously producing high-purity nitrogen.

Core Separation Principle: The core of PSA nitrogen production relies on the special adsorption characteristics of carbon molecular sieves to achieve oxygen-nitrogen separation: Carbon molecular sieves are carbon-based microporous adsorbents with precisely controlled pore sizes of 0.3-0.5 nm, perfectly matching the critical diffusion rate range of oxygen molecules (kinetic diameter approximately 2.8 Å) and nitrogen molecules (approximately 3.0 Å). Smaller oxygen molecules diffuse quickly and rapidly enter the micropores of the molecular sieve for adsorption; nitrogen molecules diffuse slowly and have difficulty entering the micropores, thus achieving enrichment in the gas phase and realizing efficient separation of the two gases.

Complete Dual-Tower Cycle Workflow

PSA nitrogen generation systems generally employ a dual-tower alternating operation mode. The entire cycle typically lasts 60-120 seconds and is divided into four core stages. The entire process is automatically controlled by a PLC system to achieve continuous and stable gas production:

Adsorption Gas Generation Stage: Pre-treated clean compressed air (pressure typically 0.6-1.0 MPa) enters one of the adsorption towers. The carbon molecular sieve rapidly adsorbs oxygen, carbon dioxide, and residual moisture. Unadsorbed nitrogen is discharged from the top of the tower and sent to a nitrogen storage tank as the finished gas output.

Pressure Equalization and Recovery Stage: When the molecular sieve in the adsorption tower approaches adsorption saturation, the system introduces the high-pressure nitrogen from that tower into the other adsorption tower that has just completed regeneration, allowing the pressure in the two towers to quickly equalize. This step not only recovers the energy of the high-pressure gas, reducing energy consumption, but also establishes a pressure foundation for the next round of adsorption.

Desorption and Regeneration Stage: After pressure equalization, the adsorption tower is rapidly depressurized to atmospheric pressure. The adsorption capacity of the carbon molecular sieve decreases significantly, and previously adsorbed oxygen and impurities are automatically desorbed and discharged from the micropores. Simultaneously, a small amount of finished nitrogen gas is introduced to back-purge the tower, thoroughly removing residual impurities and allowing the molecular sieve to fully restore its adsorption activity, completing the regeneration process.

Pre-treatment Purification Mechanism To prevent impurities such as oil, water, and dust from "poisoning" the carbon molecular sieve and causing it to fail, the raw air must undergo a complete purification process before entering the adsorption tower: The high-pressure air output from the air compressor passes through multiple stages of filters, a refrigerated dryer, and a desiccant dryer, reducing the compressed air dew point to ≤-40℃, ultimately achieving an oil content of ≤0.001ppm and a dust particle size of ≤0.01μm. This ensures the air source entering the adsorption tower is pure and dry, guaranteeing separation efficiency and the lifespan of the molecular sieve from the source.
